Our main inspiration for our environment designs were of course, Alice’s Madness Returns (2011). I started developing some weirder curling trees than within the game, but we also started to look at Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), and a lot further into some German expressionism.
I studied loads of artist’s thumbnails to look at perspective such as Feng Zhu and Scott Robertson. My thumbnails have very dramatic lighting as I was thinking about night time and the light of the moon but I think we are going to have our lighting a lot softer.
Some points to consider:
- Using the environment to frame the focus towards the character.
- Some parts of the creature can glow, and the creature will be pale to stand out from the environment.
- Creature will be a different colour to contrast the environment.
- Environment will be unsaturated, dull colours.
- Softer, rounder designs for character/jagged, bent swirl designs for environment.
- Soft moon to match character as well as warm colours to show its home and the connection between the moon and the rabbit.
