Scott Robertson

I adore this man’s work!!! His unique creations are amazing.

He was particularly inspiring for his vehicle concepts:

I think something more unique and with more hard edges would match the scene more on a whole:

My favourite was this piece. I liked it because we had initially decided that our whole scene was a ruining ship landing deck. This looks like it could be a scavanger ship and I really love the design. It will be fun to model!:

Vehicle modelling ideas!!!!!

I’m excited to model something different. At first I had looked at Darren Bartley’s models and had included them in a composition sketch at the beginning. They are unusual and interesting.

Some of his vehicle designs look very organic, and would be easier to model in zbrush. They look like they could potentially be creatures.

We went with more hard surface modelling concepts to match the rest of the scene. I was interested in these :

I also love these strange mech designs. I drew these in a compositional sketch earlier. I think they are more unique :

Size of Skyguard

We imagined this thing to be gargantuan !

I just looked up some size comparisons to give me an idea of what size to start modelling it in maya.

https://scmwiki2012.wordpress.com/r/762-2/

I changed the units to metres in maya and started with something similar to the size of the huge oil tanker, around 415m. I also will play around with the size to make it look bigger in our short animation of the scene later on. This skyguard is to contain ships amongst loads of other things.

Halo 5: Guardians

Kory Hubbell created a lot of interesting artwork towards this game. I really liked the unusual shapes and the small glowing parts within parts of the buildings that really make them stand out, quite similar to beeple.

The circular structure looks pretty similar to what Natasha is creating. I particularly love the portal-like creation. It has some really beautiful detail. It could be interesting to try out in maya and bring it into zbrush in the future.

Darren Bacon also created some really lovely pieces from it:

It would be so interesting to add loads more to the landing part within our piece using little parts of each of these concepts.

Steve Burg

Steve Burg’s work was particularly interesting. I combined it with our original ideas for the Skyguard to add more detail and make it a lot more interesting.

Some pieces of his I found could really help inspire me towards creating the skyguard:

The piece I particularly loved:

This piece is quite similar to the shape in the original image I was going to work from. It is hard to see but I love the front design and we also saw the circular shapes in the foreground which gave us ideas to change the design of the ship platform to a more rounded design that Natasha is working on.

Beeple

“Beeple is Mike Winkelmann.

A graphic designer from Appleton, Wisconsin, USA. His short films have screened at onedotzero, Prix Ars Electronica, the Sydney Biennale, Ann Arbor Film Festival and many others. He has also released a series of Creative Commons live visuals that have been used by electronic acts such as deadmau5, Skrillex, Avicii, Zedd, Taio Cruz, Tiësto, Amon Tobin, Wolfgang Gartner, and Flying Lotus and many others. He currently releases work on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint.”

I found that beeple contained a lot of concepts that I would love to draw out simple designs from to create vectors in illustrator to bring into maya to add more detail to my models. The models will be mostly hard surface, so adding little parts that I could perhaps later light up to make the models stand out more might just be that something extra to make them better.

I viewed Zero-Day quite some time ago and loved it immediately. I love the structure of the animated parts to the different machines. I also really liked the blue and orange glowing lines on a lot of the deep blue machinery. The lights really make them stand out and also make me think of a lot of concepts in the game Halo 5: Guardians by Microsoft Studios (2015).

I also loved the short Transparent Machines but I know that to achieve something like this in a shorter amount of time would have to be created in Cinema 4D, of which I have no experience yet. Something like this could look really awesome as part of a ship model.

Feng Zhu

Pinterest board for the environment modelling to get some general ideas across: https://www.pinterest.com/abigailgelston/environment-modelling-insp/

Our theme is sci-fi, so one of my initial thoughts was the artist Feng Zhu, but his artwork is often more organic. These were some of my favourites as ideas for the environment itself:

One piece particularly made me think of an animal carcass, a similar idea to what we thought the bridge was initially. I tried to incorporate some of these concepts into the little sketches I created for ideas for the scene. I also love a lot of Feng Zhu’s vehicle designs, but some look very complicated and they may be easier to sculpt in ZBrush or mudbox.

Ruan Jia

Natasha found this artist towards our modelling project and some of his buildings and architectural designs are particularly fascinating.

We looked at these pieces for some inspiration:

Natasha looked at the last image a lot to add detail to her landing space model. I loved the hard edge look and how loads of the pieces looked attached and tried to achieve this within my models.
